Project is an annual camp held every August for Explorer Scouts from across the UK. The week long camp is held in Epping Forest which is in North East London. During the week Explorers complete four conservation projects within the forest, which can be used to earn a number of Scouting Awards and can be used as the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Residential Project. For more information about the awards that you can earn, please see our Awards page.

Project first started in 1989, when it was called Project 800 (to celebrate the 800th year of the mayorality of London). There has been a Project ever since, the last Project, in 2007 was called Project 818, the next is therefore Project 819! Go to our history page to find out more about previous projects.

Who runs Project 819?

Project is run by a national Scout Fellowship which is registered with the Scout Association. The fellowship is made up of experienced adults, Leaders and Commissioners from across the UK. We work in conjunction with the Epping Forest Centenary Trust.

How much does Project 819 cost, and what do I get for my money?

The cost for Project this year has been set at £45.  We can offer this camp at such a ridiculously low price because we receive sponsorship from the City of London in return for the work that we do in the forest.  The cost of the camp includes:

  • Camp fees
  • Transport during the camp (but you have to get yourself to and from home)
  • All meals from Sunday tea to Saturday breakfast
  • Badges for the awards that you earn whilst at Project
  • Entertainment every evening
  • Day trip to London on the Wednesday
  • T-Shirt

Where else can you get a full weeks camp, with all of the above included for as little as £45? If you find a national camp that offers all of this for less, please let us know!

Why should I attend Project 819?

As well as all of the awards that you can earn, attending Project is a great way to meet fellow Explorers from across the country, make new friends, learn new skills and to simply have a lot of fun whilst undertaking practical conservation projects that make a real difference to the forest, its wildlife and visitors.

The sites for Project 819 have not been decided on yet (we will announce it on our home page as soon as they are, so keep checking back!) We always strive to have a mix of different types of conservation projects such as construction (like the board walk at Swaines Green constructed during Project 818), pond clearance (like Walthamstow Pond during Project 818) and habitat reconstruction (like Furse Ground and Warren Hill during Project 818).  You can also take a look at our maps section for a more interactive view of what we have done in the forest.

What is planned for the Wednesday day out?

Everybody needs a rest, because all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! That is why every project we leave the campsite and Epping Forest behind and go somewhere for the day. During previous Projects we have visited Thorpe Park, the Millennium Dome, Tower Bridge, the London Eye etc  Have a look through our photo albums, and click on Wednesday to see what we have got up to in previous years.

The Wednesday day out for Project 819 is most likely to be a day trip to London (but this is subject to change) The exact plans are unavailable at the moment, but as soon as we know them, we will announce them on our home page, so please keep checking back!

What entertainment is planned for the evenings?

Again, at the time of writing we don't have the exact plans, but as soon as we do, we will make an announcement on our homepage - so remember, keep checking back.

During previous projects we have had swimming at Gilwell, campfires, quizzes, orienteering, talent shows, crystal maze style challenges plus much more! Have a browse through our photos page to see what we have got up to in previous years.

Are there any leaflets or downloads that I can give to my friends, parents or leaders?

Yes - take a look at our downloads section for leaflets, posters and flyers. We have also included information sheets, designed to give to your mates, parents or leaders so they can get to know more about Project.

How do I apply?

It couldn't be simpler, visit our Apply page, and follow the instructions. Remember your place will not be reserved until you have paid in full and completed all of the necessary paperwork. Please apply asap, there are limited places available - Project is always very popular and so these get snapped up pretty quickly. Apply today to avoid disappointment!

You want to know something else?

Hopefully we have covered every question there is, but if we have missed something out, please feel free to get in touch - go to our contacts page for email addresses.
