Buffer Lands
Epping Forest has 720 hectares of buffer land, which
was purchased by the City of London in order to protect the boundaries of
the Forest from the encroaching urban development. Most of the land
was former farms or estates of stately homes. Some of the sites that we have
worked on during Project have been on buffer land in order to improve access
and the habitats.
During 2001 and 2002 (Projects 812 and 813) we worked
at Copped Hall Park, an estate next to the M25 at the North end of the
forest. During these Projects we removed the fences that formed the boundary
of the estate, allowing the free movement of wildlife and people. In 2006
(Project 817) we worked on a pathway at North Farm, some of the last
remaining characteristic landscape the borders the forest. In 2007 (Project
818) we worked at Swaines Green, a natural woodland, interspersed with
meadow and glades, lying to the west of Epping. During this Project we
constructed a boardwalk to enable easier access, and protect the habitat.
